My Considered Standpoint As A Teacher (SUMMARY)
In my lessons good leadership will start on a level, equitable and respectful platform, providing a safe and secure learning environment for students to learn and develop, in the early years. The understanding of the Teacher’s role as a leader is crucial to this.
Experience from my minor practicum has shown that encouraging students to find out about their own cultural heritage can lead to discovery and development for some students. Aboriginal cultural customs, values and codes of behaviour are an essential part of the lives of Aboriginal people. Learning experiences of Aboriginal children, as with all students, are crucial to the educational and life opportunities of students. There is a need for research which explores cultural differences between Aboriginals and Non-Aboriginals, especially in the school setting to determine the extent to which an Aboriginal pedagogy is justified. It is my intention to make best my efforts in working these needs into my teaching strategies, with acknowledgement, acceptance and understanding of Indigenous Australia culture when teaching in the Visual Arts.
Since the focus of the classroom, in postmodern education, becomes the student's construction of knowledge, they shift away from a teacher-centred classroom to a more student-centred environment. Here, students create knowledge, and are no longer forced to bow to the subjection of traditional objective knowledge. Constructivism is the main underlying learning theory in postmodern education. As a postmodern artist having practiced his trade for some years, living and working the post modern experience, I find it a curious thing to apply the model and develop new notions on an old friend, as I work post modern theory into my pedagogy and teacher development.
A thirst to understand such issues as School Choice, Public and Private school funding, development of the teaching profession, the introduction of ‘new scheme teachers’ and the new labour Government’s policy on education. Developing a sound role as leader, building strong Indigenous links, and having a firm awareness for contemporary contexts for educating our young will be the basis to ground my considered standpoint as a Teacher.
